Growing herbs is rapidly gaining favor with gardeners today. Both the experienced and beginners are discovering the rewards of growing fresh herbs. They are joining an age old pursuit of seeking to enjoy the delightful products offered by herbs. This pursuit has touched all societies and ages. These how to plant herb garden tips will help the beginning herb gardener get off to a good start on the path to fresh herb enjoyment.

Herbs are easy to grow and starting out they don’t necessarily have to be grown in their own garden. They can be planted in an existing flower bed or garden as long as it drains well and it will receive plenty of sunshine. They can also be grown in pots that can be placed either indoors or outside. If culinary herbs are being cultivated it is a good idea to plant them near the kitchen so they will be immediately available for cooking.

An enjoyable challenge to the beginning herb gardener is picking which herbs to raise. In addition to culinary herbs other types include medicinal, aromatic, ornamental, beverage, pesticidal and industrial. It is recommended for the beginner to start with familiar culinary herbs and expand with other type herbs as the confidence and experience levels grow.

          ]]>

Here are a few suggestions with comments for the new gardener’s considersation.

SWEET MARJORAM – This is a good plant for growing in pots because it only grows to twelve inches and needs only six inches of space. In warmer areas it can be a perennial but in cooler climes with frequent frosts it is an annual. Its reward is the delicate flavor it adds to soups, salads, fish and lamb.

THYME – This herb is used to flavor poultry dressing and soups. It grows to twelve inches and needs eight inches of space. It is a hardy perennial that becomes a shrub that produces leaves for flavoring. It also needs rich soil.

SUMMER SAVORY – Excellent when used to create mouth-watering fish specialties and to flavor soups and beans. This is a delicate little annual that germinates in only seven to ten days and grows up to twelve inched and requires five inches of space.

BORAGE – This plant’s leaves are a great addition to a tossed salad with its subtle flavor. It does not like to be moved so it should be planted directly in the garden where it will reach a height of two feet and need twelve inches of space. It is an annual.

LAVENDER – Here is an aromatic that a new herb gardener might like to try. It is a hardy perennial with gray leaves and spikes of fragrant lavender flowers. The leaves can be dried by hanging them in a cool dry space like and attic or garage. The pleasant scented dried leaves can be used for a variety of purposes including freshening up a linen closet.

Armed with this information you are now ready to start your adventure in herb gardening so go for the gusto.

When my Dad was a young boy in the Depression his family worked on a tomato farm as part of the government’s relief program. You can imagine he was a great one for giving tomato gardening tips and advice. The fact remains that there were always tomatoes in our garden, so that juicy tomato flavor that only comes from a freshly picked tomato, is something we dream about all winter. Especially after eating those horrible winter tomatoes in the stores! This article discusses some of the problems growing tomatoes can bring.

Garden tomatoes are actually easy to grow and most people will have few problems growing tomatoes. There are some common things that pop up each and every year.

Here is a list of five problems and some tomato gardening tips and solutions.

Problem 1: If you accidentally buy cherry tomatoes instead of regular tomatoes, you have big problems with thousands of little tomatoes! The only way to tell the difference is with the little tabs in the tomato plant packs. You must read the tabs carefully and hope they are right.

          ]]>

Problem 2: Staking the tomatoes. It all starts out nice and simple, and neat. As the tomatoes plants grow, it is harder, since you will run out of stake to keep up with the growth. The art of staking, pruning, tying will keep you busy all summer. Do not be surprised if they fall over anyway!

Problem 3: Tomatoes need lots of water. Believe all tomato gardening tips you read on water . Tomatoes will not produce, and will get fungus and disease when there is not enough water. Even the time of day you water makes a difference. Water in the hot sun, it evaporates, and water too late, in the evening, you run the risk of fungus.

Problem 4: The end of the growing season brings bugs, worms and tomato rot. If you planted enough plants, you should get enough tomatoes, even with this bad stuff. The good news by this time in the summer, you are getting tired of caring for your plants, so it does not matter!

Problem 5: Tomatoes will grow wild! After awhile thing just get plain crazy. The tomato plants just keep making new shoots and they keep on growing all over the place. One tip is to calculate when there is not enough time left before the first frost for a new tomatoes to grow to full size, and just chop off the new flowers. This lets the tomatoes that are left get all the nutrients.

These problems growing tomatoes do not result in destroying your plants, so you still get a nice juicy sweet tomato to put in a salad or on a sandwich through the summer. It is never a bad idea to read up on tomato growing tips each spring, so you can start dreaming about that juicy tomato on your summer hamburger.

Everyone can use some extra help and advice with some expert tomato gardening tips and ideas.

You know you will need to be pruning tomatoes plants to avoid ending up with overgrown tomato plants, so it is helpful to realize that you will do different things at different stages of the growing season. You can easily define three separate stages, each with their own tomato gardening tips to follow and adjust your efforts to match. You will find everyone has their own opinions on this, so reading about common tomato gardening problems will be helpful. this article however is based more on experiences and not as much what the textbook has to say.

When the plants are first growing, all of your pruning tomatoes efforts will focus on the new leaves and the new growth shoots that are between the trunk and leaves. At this point you only want one main trunk so that it can grow large and sturdy. What you do is snip off the leaves that are closest to the ground as new ones form above them. Then by eliminating the side shoots, all the energy will be directed to the newly formed tomato and not the leaves. This lets the tomatoes grow larger. Once your tomato plant gets as high as the stakes or to the top of the cage, your strategies will begin to change.

Tomato plants at this size become more difficult to keep up. What you will do is turn things around and let the new shoots form and cut off new growth at the top. With this tomato gardening tip you keep the same principal, but in reverse. You will get a bushier plant, but it will not outgrow your stakes or cage. You can pinch back some of the new growth, but let some of them grow out. Keep pulling unnecessary leaves off, but be aware that this is the hot time of the summer and the ground and the tomatoes need the shade the leaf provides. Your goal is to still channel the nutrients to the tomatoes and not the foliage.

There is a point of no return, and you just have to face that you have overgrown tomatoes. You will have to admit that you also have tomato gardening problems. One of the pruning tomato tips to use at this point is to count 30 days ahead. If that is within the time you usually have left before the first frost, then you can stop letting new tomatoes form, and just cut them off along with all new shoots and a pile of leaves Only pay attention to making sure the tomatoes already there can finish growing.

Do the best you can for as long as you can is some of the most practical tomato gardening tips and advice there is when dealing with overgrown tomato plants. You could really apply that advice to other tomato gardening problems like your fungus and pest issues, too. Everyone really needs to think about being sure not to overdo it by putting in more plants than you need in the spring!

Overgrown tomato plants or not, everyone can use some extra help and advice with some expert tomato gardening tips and advice.

Landscape Gardening gives a pleasure such as coming home to your own garden is like owning a piece of nature. All houses need some form of garden to be at peace with nature. Whatever the space afforded to you it is possible to create a garden that will enrich your life and be the envy of others, to say nothing about increasing the value of your property.

The wonderful thing about having a garden of your own is that you can just sit and absorb the peace that it generates and with the ready availability of professional landscape gardening advice and assistance it doesn’t need to be a nail splitting backbreaking exercise, although the more you are involved in the project the more satisfaction you will obtain from it.

          ]]>

There are many things to consider when designing and landscaping a garden, whether you live in Sheffield or any other part of the country but the primary and essential one is “What type of garden do you want?”. Gardens can be based on the plants you would like. to see, the use to which you wish to put the garden, the amount of maintenance you wish to be involved in or simply the style that catches your eye and the aesthetics behind it.

If Great Britain is the home of landscape gardening then Lancelot ‘capability’ Brown is surely the father and Chatsworth park, some 11 miles from Sheffield is the prime example although lovers of Sheffield Park in Sussex, another Capability Brown project, may disagree. Noted as both a gardener and architect, his gardens quickly became highly prestigious and landscape gardening became highly fashionable. He rejected the formal geometric style of gardening favoured by his predecessors for a more natural approach and in and age without planning regulations the ‘world was his oyster’. He is credited with designing over 100 landscaped parks and his client list included Prime Ministers and royalty aplenty.

Fresh herb plants add charm and flavor to winter meals. The herb plants are easier to find in garden centers in the spring, but some gardens have mature herb plants to sell throughout the summer and even fall. For putting up an indoor herb garden, following tips are to be considered: presence of sunny windowsills that herb generally prefers, getting herb plants from a good garden center nursery with garden advice to assist with generating a better indoor herb garden, using only top grade potting soil with an organic fertilizer mixed in, going one inch up in size of the gardening container while transplant the herb, and not planting oreganos, mints, lemon balm or bee balm with other plants because they will overgrow everything. Instead the herb plants should be potted in a garden container.

          ]]>

With the gaining popularity of herb plants, many find it a convenient option to grow them in the indoor garden. But for those who might not have the luxury of space, another option available is indoor garden. User friendly kits with the instructions for a novice make the task easier. Such gardens fit snugly on windowsills and need attention in watering and timely pruning. They not only add vibrancy to the dull and mundane look of the room, but they also act as effective air purifiers and offer a whole range of quick home remedies for some health problems.

Attention should also be given to estimate the extent of flora that can be accommodated, complementing of the herbs with one another, accessibility for maintenance and the height to which the herbs will grow.

Herb gardening can be commenced by purchasing herb plants and planting them or growing them from seeds. Indoor herb garden is a terrific way to relax, have a good time and enjoy the herb plants created. It is even more rewarding to grow a herb from a tiny seed than it is to grow other plants.

Once, the indoor herb garden is created, it is equally important to know how to take care of it. By understanding their needs and providing their requirements at the right time a healthy, leafy indoor herb garden can be had throughout the year.

If you want to be surrounded by lush greenery all year round and don’t have enough space outdoors, you can create an indoor garden. Whether you want to grow foliage, vegetables, or both, you will find indoor gardening tips to be helpful. The internet is filled with guides on indoor plants and gardens, so you need to do a bit of research before getting started. It’s important that you have the information needed for growing house plants successfully.

Here are some indoor gardening tips:

• Make sure they get enough light. If they don’t get enough light every single day, they will become weak and frail. Even if your home or office doesn’t get enough sunlight, you can buy artificial light bulbs or lamps. You can also choose plants that will grow well in environments with low lights.

• Give your plants a bath. Seriously. You don’t have to do so every day, but it’s a good idea to do so on a regular basis. Make sure that there is no grime or dust on the leaves or stems. Clean every spot on the plant, including the underside of each leaf.

          ]]>

• Be careful with the type of soil you use. Outdoor soil can contain pesticides or weeds that can be harmful to indoor plants. Use a special type of soil designed for indoor containers and pots. It’s generally cleaner than outside soil.

• Don’t forget to add holes to the bottom of the container! Of course, you can purchase pots with holes at the bottom, but if you want to use a plastic container, you might have to make your own. Without drainage holes, the water will collect in the pot, which will cause damage to the roots.

• Some of the best indoor gardening tips concern watering. Water is essential for a plant’s growth. Some need more than others, but they all need a fair amount on a daily basis. You should always use room temperature water. However, you shouldn’t use TOO much of it, or that will harm your plants as well. Make sure you give them enough water, but not too much.

• Fertilization is also important. Water will flush out some of the soil’s nutrients, so you will have to add some more. Many people choose to spray a liquid fertilizer in their plants’ regularly. Keep track of how often you fertilize each plant so that you don’t overdo it.

These are just some of the most helpful indoor gardening tips you need to consider whenever you grow plants in your home or office. Keep these in mind, do additional research if you have to, and your plants will grow successfully!

Window planters are the latest fad in the United States. Now that affordable, low maintenance alternatives to wood such as vinyl and PVC, window box gardening are available, window planters are back in full bloom after taking a break for several decades. Planting in a window box can be fun, creative, and challenging all at once. A great idea for a beginner is to use a removable liner inside your window box. This will give you the most flexibility and allow you to mix it up with your window box all year round.

Once you decide on an easily accessible location for your window box you’re ready to begin planting. This is where you get to let your creativity and personality come out the most. The question is whether you wish to use the window box for gardening, planting, or landscaping. A window box on the front of the house will usually better serve to hold plants and flowers for landscaping and are great for adding curb appeal. If you have an extended window in the front of your house, this may be a great place to stage a long custom window box. A long double or triple window can showcase a long string of flowers, hanging plants, or ivy and can mix well with nearby landscaping.

If you wish to enjoy your window box in a more private setting, gardening is a great alternative and can often be achieved from inside the house with some casual maintenance if you place your window box strategically. A small window box off of a popular window can be used to grow adifferent herbs and spices to create your own easy to access. It’s a good baby step for those of us who want to start a much larger garden in our backyard.

One last suggestion for window box planting is to choose flowers or plants that coordinate well with the color and style of the home. Bright colors will bring more focus to the planters and green plants will often neutralize and cause your window box to blend in. Make sure to consider the temperature and weather conditions that the plants can grow in as well and water often so that the flowers and plants look their healthiest at all times. If you apply some of these tips you’ll be well on your way to having the best looking house on the block!
