When my Dad was a young boy in the Depression his family worked on a tomato farm as part of the government’s relief program. You can imagine he was a great one for giving tomato gardening tips and advice. The fact remains that there were always tomatoes in our garden, so that juicy tomato flavor that only comes from a freshly picked tomato, is something we dream about all winter. Especially after eating those horrible winter tomatoes in the stores! This article discusses some of the problems growing tomatoes can bring.

Garden tomatoes are actually easy to grow and most people will have few problems growing tomatoes. There are some common things that pop up each and every year.

Here is a list of five problems and some tomato gardening tips and solutions.

Problem 1: If you accidentally buy cherry tomatoes instead of regular tomatoes, you have big problems with thousands of little tomatoes! The only way to tell the difference is with the little tabs in the tomato plant packs. You must read the tabs carefully and hope they are right.

          ]]>

Problem 2: Staking the tomatoes. It all starts out nice and simple, and neat. As the tomatoes plants grow, it is harder, since you will run out of stake to keep up with the growth. The art of staking, pruning, tying will keep you busy all summer. Do not be surprised if they fall over anyway!

Problem 3: Tomatoes need lots of water. Believe all tomato gardening tips you read on water . Tomatoes will not produce, and will get fungus and disease when there is not enough water. Even the time of day you water makes a difference. Water in the hot sun, it evaporates, and water too late, in the evening, you run the risk of fungus.

Problem 4: The end of the growing season brings bugs, worms and tomato rot. If you planted enough plants, you should get enough tomatoes, even with this bad stuff. The good news by this time in the summer, you are getting tired of caring for your plants, so it does not matter!

Problem 5: Tomatoes will grow wild! After awhile thing just get plain crazy. The tomato plants just keep making new shoots and they keep on growing all over the place. One tip is to calculate when there is not enough time left before the first frost for a new tomatoes to grow to full size, and just chop off the new flowers. This lets the tomatoes that are left get all the nutrients.

These problems growing tomatoes do not result in destroying your plants, so you still get a nice juicy sweet tomato to put in a salad or on a sandwich through the summer. It is never a bad idea to read up on tomato growing tips each spring, so you can start dreaming about that juicy tomato on your summer hamburger.

Everyone can use some extra help and advice with some expert tomato gardening tips and ideas.

You know you will need to be pruning tomatoes plants to avoid ending up with overgrown tomato plants, so it is helpful to realize that you will do different things at different stages of the growing season. You can easily define three separate stages, each with their own tomato gardening tips to follow and adjust your efforts to match. You will find everyone has their own opinions on this, so reading about common tomato gardening problems will be helpful. this article however is based more on experiences and not as much what the textbook has to say.

When the plants are first growing, all of your pruning tomatoes efforts will focus on the new leaves and the new growth shoots that are between the trunk and leaves. At this point you only want one main trunk so that it can grow large and sturdy. What you do is snip off the leaves that are closest to the ground as new ones form above them. Then by eliminating the side shoots, all the energy will be directed to the newly formed tomato and not the leaves. This lets the tomatoes grow larger. Once your tomato plant gets as high as the stakes or to the top of the cage, your strategies will begin to change.

Tomato plants at this size become more difficult to keep up. What you will do is turn things around and let the new shoots form and cut off new growth at the top. With this tomato gardening tip you keep the same principal, but in reverse. You will get a bushier plant, but it will not outgrow your stakes or cage. You can pinch back some of the new growth, but let some of them grow out. Keep pulling unnecessary leaves off, but be aware that this is the hot time of the summer and the ground and the tomatoes need the shade the leaf provides. Your goal is to still channel the nutrients to the tomatoes and not the foliage.

There is a point of no return, and you just have to face that you have overgrown tomatoes. You will have to admit that you also have tomato gardening problems. One of the pruning tomato tips to use at this point is to count 30 days ahead. If that is within the time you usually have left before the first frost, then you can stop letting new tomatoes form, and just cut them off along with all new shoots and a pile of leaves Only pay attention to making sure the tomatoes already there can finish growing.

Do the best you can for as long as you can is some of the most practical tomato gardening tips and advice there is when dealing with overgrown tomato plants. You could really apply that advice to other tomato gardening problems like your fungus and pest issues, too. Everyone really needs to think about being sure not to overdo it by putting in more plants than you need in the spring!

Overgrown tomato plants or not, everyone can use some extra help and advice with some expert tomato gardening tips and advice.

Landscape Gardening gives a pleasure such as coming home to your own garden is like owning a piece of nature. All houses need some form of garden to be at peace with nature. Whatever the space afforded to you it is possible to create a garden that will enrich your life and be the envy of others, to say nothing about increasing the value of your property.

The wonderful thing about having a garden of your own is that you can just sit and absorb the peace that it generates and with the ready availability of professional landscape gardening advice and assistance it doesn’t need to be a nail splitting backbreaking exercise, although the more you are involved in the project the more satisfaction you will obtain from it.

          ]]>

There are many things to consider when designing and landscaping a garden, whether you live in Sheffield or any other part of the country but the primary and essential one is “What type of garden do you want?”. Gardens can be based on the plants you would like. to see, the use to which you wish to put the garden, the amount of maintenance you wish to be involved in or simply the style that catches your eye and the aesthetics behind it.

If Great Britain is the home of landscape gardening then Lancelot ‘capability’ Brown is surely the father and Chatsworth park, some 11 miles from Sheffield is the prime example although lovers of Sheffield Park in Sussex, another Capability Brown project, may disagree. Noted as both a gardener and architect, his gardens quickly became highly prestigious and landscape gardening became highly fashionable. He rejected the formal geometric style of gardening favoured by his predecessors for a more natural approach and in and age without planning regulations the ‘world was his oyster’. He is credited with designing over 100 landscaped parks and his client list included Prime Ministers and royalty aplenty.

If you want to be surrounded by lush greenery all year round and don’t have enough space outdoors, you can create an indoor garden. Whether you want to grow foliage, vegetables, or both, you will find indoor gardening tips to be helpful. The internet is filled with guides on indoor plants and gardens, so you need to do a bit of research before getting started. It’s important that you have the information needed for growing house plants successfully.

Here are some indoor gardening tips:

• Make sure they get enough light. If they don’t get enough light every single day, they will become weak and frail. Even if your home or office doesn’t get enough sunlight, you can buy artificial light bulbs or lamps. You can also choose plants that will grow well in environments with low lights.

• Give your plants a bath. Seriously. You don’t have to do so every day, but it’s a good idea to do so on a regular basis. Make sure that there is no grime or dust on the leaves or stems. Clean every spot on the plant, including the underside of each leaf.

          ]]>

• Be careful with the type of soil you use. Outdoor soil can contain pesticides or weeds that can be harmful to indoor plants. Use a special type of soil designed for indoor containers and pots. It’s generally cleaner than outside soil.

• Don’t forget to add holes to the bottom of the container! Of course, you can purchase pots with holes at the bottom, but if you want to use a plastic container, you might have to make your own. Without drainage holes, the water will collect in the pot, which will cause damage to the roots.

• Some of the best indoor gardening tips concern watering. Water is essential for a plant’s growth. Some need more than others, but they all need a fair amount on a daily basis. You should always use room temperature water. However, you shouldn’t use TOO much of it, or that will harm your plants as well. Make sure you give them enough water, but not too much.

• Fertilization is also important. Water will flush out some of the soil’s nutrients, so you will have to add some more. Many people choose to spray a liquid fertilizer in their plants’ regularly. Keep track of how often you fertilize each plant so that you don’t overdo it.

These are just some of the most helpful indoor gardening tips you need to consider whenever you grow plants in your home or office. Keep these in mind, do additional research if you have to, and your plants will grow successfully!

Window planters are the latest fad in the United States. Now that affordable, low maintenance alternatives to wood such as vinyl and PVC, window box gardening are available, window planters are back in full bloom after taking a break for several decades. Planting in a window box can be fun, creative, and challenging all at once. A great idea for a beginner is to use a removable liner inside your window box. This will give you the most flexibility and allow you to mix it up with your window box all year round.

Once you decide on an easily accessible location for your window box you’re ready to begin planting. This is where you get to let your creativity and personality come out the most. The question is whether you wish to use the window box for gardening, planting, or landscaping. A window box on the front of the house will usually better serve to hold plants and flowers for landscaping and are great for adding curb appeal. If you have an extended window in the front of your house, this may be a great place to stage a long custom window box. A long double or triple window can showcase a long string of flowers, hanging plants, or ivy and can mix well with nearby landscaping.

If you wish to enjoy your window box in a more private setting, gardening is a great alternative and can often be achieved from inside the house with some casual maintenance if you place your window box strategically. A small window box off of a popular window can be used to grow adifferent herbs and spices to create your own easy to access. It’s a good baby step for those of us who want to start a much larger garden in our backyard.

One last suggestion for window box planting is to choose flowers or plants that coordinate well with the color and style of the home. Bright colors will bring more focus to the planters and green plants will often neutralize and cause your window box to blend in. Make sure to consider the temperature and weather conditions that the plants can grow in as well and water often so that the flowers and plants look their healthiest at all times. If you apply some of these tips you’ll be well on your way to having the best looking house on the block!

Nothing says spring quite like a daffodil, crocus or tulip. Bulbs can fill your garden with vibrant color from early spring through late summer. They are, in general, very hearty, easy to grow and care for, and will bloom year after year. With just a little care, you can have colorful blooms from your bulbs all through the spring and summer. Daffodils, iris, tulips, gladiolus, hyacinth and daylilies are just some of the many bulb favorites.

Choosing Bulbs –

Good bulbs should be firm (avoid signs of rotting or softness), and should not exhibit signs of external damage such as cracks and deep scratches. Avoid bulbs that are already growing shoots or roots. Before planting, keep bulbs stored in a cool, dry location without direct sunlight.

When deciding which type of bulb to purchase, think about timing. Are you looking for color for early spring? Mid-summer? Perhaps you would like several types of bulbs that bloom at different times so that you have color throughout your garden extended throughout spring and summer? Ask your nursery or garden store which bulbs are recommended for your area. Of course, you can also ask your lawn care or landscaping professional for gardening tips and advice.

Planting Bulbs -

As a rule of thumb, bulbs should be planted in the fall (roughly early- to mid-October). You want to get the bulbs in the ground about six weeks before the ground starts to freeze. Plant the bulbs in well-prepared soil. Planting depth is determined by the type of bulb (4″ deep for crocus, 6″ deep for daffodils and hyacinths, 8″ deep for tulips).

Spacing is also determined by the type of bulb. In general, plant bulbs about 4″ to 6″ apart. If you prefer a more formal look of rows, you may wish to invest in a bulb planter. If you desire a more natural, clumped look, dig a wider hole that can accommodate several bulbs (five to ten) planted together. A small amount of fertilizer can be added at the bottom of each hole, and then covered with a thin layer of soil so that the bulb is not resting directly on the fertilizer. Bulbs should be placed into the hole pointed end up with the flat, rooting side facing down. Cover the holes with soil and give the bulbs a thorough soaking of water. Bulbs are a wonderful way to bring vibrant color to your garden throughout the spring and summer (with minimal effort). With just a little work – and a few gardening tips – in the fall, you can enjoy beautiful blooms as early as next spring!

          ]]>

Caring for your spring bulbs -

Annual bulbs are classic additions to a home landscape. When you plant bulbs for spring, you give yourself the gift of great expectations. All winter long you wait for what will come and then one day in early spring, you are rewarded with green sprouts breaking through the soil. When you plant your bulbs, make sure you know the mature height of the different bulb types so taller blooms do not cover the shorter blooms.

Follow the tips below and enjoy a beautiful spring garden.

Where to plant bulbs in your garden -

If left up to the bulbs themselves, most would ask to be planted in an area that provides both sun and shade. Ideally, the area would have shade during the hottest part of the day. This extends the life of the blossoms, so you can enjoy their spring color as long as possible.

It’s wise to avoid areas that have deep shade all day long, because the leaves need some sunlight to create the carbohydrates needed to provide vibrant blooms the next season. Exposed to constant shade, the plants perform less satisfactorily year after year.

Bulbs don’t like wet feet! -

It’s a good idea to select a planting area that is well drained. If you live in an area that has heavy clay soil, your bulbs will do best if you add some good-quality garden soil (not top soil) and spaghnum peat moss to the bed, then work it into the soil. If this is not an option, you can make each planting hole a bit oversized, and then fill them with a mixture of planting soil and peat moss when the bulbs are set.

Depth is important when planting bulbs -

Not all bulbs should be planted at the same depth. Smaller bulbs, which are planted in shallow holes, can be planted at the same depth (regardless of the type of soil in the bed).

Larger bulbs, such as tulip, daffodil and hyacinth, should be planted as much as two inches shallower in heavy soils than in light soils. Tulips, for example, can be planted at a depth of around five inches (to the bottom of the bulb) in heavy clay soil.

The same bulbs, however, should be planted at a depth of around seven inches in light soils. Following these simple guidelines will pay off handsomely year after year.

Nutrition for your bulbs -

Some gardeners prefer to use bone meal, mixed into the dirt at the bottom of the planting holes. Others prefer a balanced-formula bulb food that contains all three of the major nutrients — nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.

Your neighborhood lawn service company retailer can help you choose the right nutritional products for your needs. If you have questions about the differences, the store’s lawn and garden specialists can answer your questions. They can also help you select the right fertilizers and soil additives.

Believe it or not, keeping the green of Spring in you life year-round, is easier than you think. While it’s great fun to get outside and start planting that vegetable or flower garden, many people keep the freshness in their life even during the winter, by starting indoor gardens.

A houseplant, usually native to tropical climates, is grown indoors for decorative purposes. Houseplants also provide a natural and cost effective way to clean indoor air. According to Dr. Wolverton’s NASA study, it is suggested that at least one potted plant per 100 square feet of home or office space is needed to be effective air cleaners.

Of all plants that are easiest to grow indoors, herbs are at the top of the list. Not only are they green and decorative, they’re also delicious. And when grown in the kitchen, they’re just a step away from the pot of spaghetti sauce or the stew that’s cooking for dinner.

Get your herb plants from a good garden center nursery who will have plenty of garden advice to help you with your inside garden. You will need some garden equipment like a small digging garden tool, garden gloves, organic fertilizer and some small gardening containers. You probably already have most of these garden supplies in your garden shed.

The major factors to consider when growing and caring for a houseplant are water, soil, light, temperature, humidity, fertilizers, and pots. Most plants come with a description tag that will guide you on how to care for that specific plant.

Although the kitchen is a desirable spot, your plants will do best in a window that has at least six hours of sunlight a day, to keep the growth cycle moving along. This could be an east or south window. West windows tend to have the hottest sun, which may not be good for tender young plants, especially in Spring or Summer. If the window area tends to be extremely cold during winter nights, you may want to put the plants down on a cupboard or table until the sun comes back up.

          ]]>

Most indoor plants need good lighting. You can provide this through natural lighting in the room of your choice or there must be electric lighting. Darker leaved plants usually don’t need as much light as others.

Here are a few varieties of plants (these require medium to low light) that are known to be suitable for indoor gardening:
Philodendrons
Boston ferns
African violets
Cyclamens
Creeping Fig

Most houseplants grow in a tropical climate which ranges from 60-80 degrees. The majority of homes are kept around this temperature; therefore, houseplants can thrive inside the home. Night temperatures should be 10 degrees lower to duplicate nature.

Be careful of your watering habits, since plants in pots do not lose their water into the earth around them like they would in a garden. Water only when the soil is beginning to dry. But remember also, that your house does not have the same humidity as an outdoor garden, and in winter particularly, indoor heating systems dry out the air. Mist your plants in winter, to keep leaves from drying out, and to prevent the proliferation of certain pests.

Keep the plant evenly moist, but there should not be standing water in the plant’s saucer. This might require watering two to three times a week. Water the plant thoroughly and after 15 minutes empty any water that is standing in the saucer. A common mistake most people make in indoor gardening is they tend to over-water the plants, which may lead to rotting roots. Make sure to research the type of plant you have, because each kind of plant varies on their watering needs.

When picking a container/pot for your house plants, make sure it will drain properly. I know what you are probably thinking…many pots are sold without drainage holes! If you find one that you are absolutely in love with drill a hole in the bottom of the container, otherwise your plant will almost certainly die. Without a drainage hole, water collects in the pot and causes damage to the roots. If this isn’t an option you can double pot your plant.

Choose good quality and attractive container for your indoor plants. Make sure that the pot is clean before placing your new plant into it to prevent infection and to encourage healthy growth. Your container can be pretty much anything and is only limited to your imagination. For a formal garden choose a more traditional container. Regardless of your choice of container, make sure it’s not too big or too small for your planting.

Just like watering, fertilizing depends on the type of plant. If you have managed to supply your indoor garden with the right amount of light, water and humidity, fertilization may not need much attention. A good indoor fertilizer can be bought from most home depot or hardware stores. Orchids need the special fertilizer available.

Go to your garden nursery center and look thru the selections. Choose plants that will harmonize and colors that go well together. Container Gardening is fun and easy and a great way to show off your handiwork.

Believe it or not, keeping the green of Spring in you life year round, is easier than you think. While it is great fun to get outside when the weather breaks, and start planting that landscaping project, many people keep the outdoor freshness in their life, all year long, by starting indoor container gardens.

A house plant, usually native to tropical climates, is grown indoors for decorative purposes. House plants also provide a natural, and cost effective way, to clean indoor air.
TOP 10 plants most effective in removing: Formaldehyde (found in almost all indoor environments), Benzene (more industrial), and Carbon Monoxide from the air

* Bamboo Palm – Chamaedorea Seifritzii
* Chinese Evergreen – Aglaonema Modestum
* English Ivy – Hedera Helix
* Gerbera Daisy – Gerbera Jamesonii
* Janet Craig – Dracaena Janet Craig
* Marginata – Dracaena Marginata
* Mass cane/Corn Plant – Dracaena Massangeana
* Mother-in-Law’s Tongue – Sansevieria Laurentii
* Pot Mum – Chrysantheium morifolium
* Peace Lily – Spathiphyllum
* Warneckii – Dracaena Warneckii

Of all the plants that are easiest to grow indoors, herbs are at the top of the list. Not only are they green, and decorative, they are also delicious and very aromatic. And when grown in the kitchen, they are just a step away, from the pot of spaghetti sauce, or the stew, that is cooking for dinner.

Get your house plants from a good garden center, or a nursery that will have plenty of garden advice, to help you with your indoor garden. You will need some garden equipment, like a small digging garden tool, garden gloves, organic fertilizer, and some small gardening containers. You probably already have most of these garden supplies in your storage area.

          ]]>

The major factors to consider when growing, and caring for house plants, are light, temperature, water, containers, and fertilizers. Most plants come with a description tag, that will guide you on how to care for that specific plant.

Although the kitchen is a desirable spot, your plants will do best, in a window that has at least, six hours of sunlight per day, to keep the growth cycle moving along. This could be an east, or south window. West windows tend to have the hottest sun, which may not be good for tender young plants, especially in Spring or Summer. If the window area tends to be extremely cold during winter nights, you may want to put the plants down on a cupboard, or table until the sun comes back up.

Most indoor plants need good lighting. You can provide this, through natural lighting in the room of your choice, or there must be electric lighting. Darker colored plants usually do not need as much light as some others.

Here are a few varieties of plants, that require medium to low light, and are known to be suitable for indoor gardening:

Philodendrons
Boston ferns
African violets
Cyclamens
Creeping Figs

Most house plants grow in a tropical climate, which ranges from 60 to 80 degrees. The majority of homes are kept around this temperature; therefore, house plants can thrive inside the home very nicely. It is best, if night temperatures, are 10 degrees lower, to duplicate nature.

Be careful of your watering habits, since plants in pots, do not lose their water into the earth around them, like they would in a garden. Water only when the soil is beginning to dry. But remember also, that your house, does not have the same humidity, as an outdoor garden, and in winter, particularly, indoor heating systems dry out the air. Mist your plants in winter, to keep the leaves from drying out, and to prevent the infestation of certain pests.

Keep the plant evenly moist, but there should not be standing water in the plant’s saucer. This might require watering two to three times a week. Water the plant thoroughly, and after 15 minutes empty any water that is standing in the saucer. A common mistake most people make in indoor gardening, is they tend to over water their plants, which may lead to rotting roots. Make sure to research the type of plant you have, because each kind of plant varies on their watering needs.

When picking a container, or pot for your house plant, make sure it will drain properly. I know what you are thinking, many pots are sold without drainage holes! If you find one, that you are absolutely in love with, then drill a hole in the bottom of the container, otherwise your plant will almost certainly die. Without a drainage hole, water collects in the pot and causes damage to the roots. If you are unable to drill the hole, you can double pot your plant.

Choose good quality, and attractive containers for your indoor plants. Make sure that the pot is clean, before placing your new plant into it, to prevent infection, and to encourage healthy growth. Your container can be pretty much anything, and is only limited by your imagination. For a formal garden choose a more traditional container. Regardless of your choice of container, make sure it is not too big, or too small, for the plants you have chosen.

Just like watering, fertilizing depends on the type of plant. If you have managed to supply your indoor garden with the right amount of light, water and humidity, fertilization may not need much attention. A good indoor fertilizer can be bought from most home depot, or hardware stores. Orchids need the special fertilizer specially formulated for them.

Go to your local garden nursery center, and look thru the selections there. Choose plants that will harmonize with one another, and colors that will work together. Container Gardening is fun, and easy, and a great way to show off your handiwork.

What makes organic gardening different from conventional gardening techniques? The simplest answer is that organic gardeners choose to use natural or organic materials and methods, avoiding artificial chemicals to increase their production. The two main areas that distinguish organic gardening are: 1) the application of fertilizer and 2) the fight against pests.

Natural Fertilizers: Better tasting products?

Although there is no scientific evidence that the use of organic fertilizers should produce better tasting products, most organic gardeners who beg to differ. We may accept the notion that we are ingesting too many chemicals in our food, limited use of chemical fertilizers can produce better tasting and better quality product. The use of organic compost to replace chemical fertilizers is one of the most common way to fatten your culture. Other solutions include the use of tea plant origin, such as compost tea. The use of organic matter also restores the soil by increasing organic matter content.

          ]]>

Rid your garden of Pest course

Organic gardeners use natural pesticides stems from concerns about pesticide residues on foods, groundwater and soil. Many reports have linked a number of health problems to exposure to pesticides, which many consumers and producers shift towards organic products.

So how can we fight against pests garden naturally? Firstly healthy organic soil that produces healthy plants that can fight garden pests themselves.

Other biological pest control products based on plant extracts, such as oranges and lemons. D-limonene, which is the active ingredient in citrus oils, kills many flying and crawling insects on contact. Destroy the respiratory system of the insect, an insect essentially suffocates.

Another goal of all organic products pesticide is made from the Neem tree. Neem oil is produced by pressing the seed oil, neem does not kill parasites directly feeding, rather than discourages insects from feeding on plants that are covered, in essence, starving parasites to death. Neem oil can be used on vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants. Another beneficial aspect of the use of Neem oil is that it is non-toxic to birds, mammals, beetles, spiders and bees.

As you can see, there are many options for organic gardeners to both develop and protect their products without the use of synthetic chemicals. There are many organic compounds present in nature that are effective natural repellent to pests and others that are beneficial to the growth of an organic garden.
