Selection of suitable varieties

The gardening process begins with the selection of an apt variety of plant or vegetable suitable for your requirement. It is advised to select plants which do not grow in great heights or require larger space within your limited compound. The selection of plants should be made after taking in consideration of the weather condition prevailing at your surroundings. Beginners can choose simple varieties such as peas, carrots, potatoes and beans. Varieties which are suitable for container gardening can also be opted.

Method of planting

Try to plant the seeds or saplings in biodegradable pots which ensure steady growth of plants in the outdoor garden.  While selecting the soil, please try to avoid the wet varieties. Store soil from the upper layer of the land, so that you will be able to get the fertile variety. While mixing the soil with the fertiliser give a little preference to cow-dung  as it is the natural variety. Ensure that the soil is not too much wet and contains extra acid contents.

Outside environment

The pot should be placed at an apt location where the flow of sunlight and air are abundant. Nearly six hours of sunshine is a must to ensure the healthy growth of the plant in the outdoor garden. Construction of drainage is also a concern for people who want to set up good outdoor garden. While keeping the pots outside, you must ensure that it would not be affected by any unhealthy infiltrations from the surrounding in the forms of pests and animals.

Regular watering

Watering is a must to ensure healthy growth of the plants. During summer season, it should be followed in a strict manner. It is advised to follow watering during morning and evening time. Try to avoid forced pumping of water as it may cause damage to the delicate roots of the plant. The better option is to use a small kettle for the purpose. Mixing manure is also possible with the water to increase the effect. But, it is better to limit such practice once a week. Pesticides should also be tried at least once a month.

You merely need an Ultra-Intensive Trellis. Step one is toerect a frame from plastic pipe. It is typically sold in 10ft lengths, which is a perfect size. Use three uprights so you don’t get sagging in the midpoint and bury them some 18in below ground, with a crosspiece at the top.

Across the top rail, tie degradable string every six inches. So at season’s end, the whole thing can be hauled away to the compost pile. Tie another cord at soil level, between one upright stake and the next. Then knot the hanging strings to the stake.

Another idea, often seen in Europe is to set a second crosspiece at the bottom – and double-loop the strings about it. And run the cords up and down. That’s easier than knotting each string off.

You then sow three rows of climbing legumes along the bottom strut. Each seed goes on each side of the vertical cord, 3in from the string. Then sow a further seed just underneath the bottom cord, and between each vertical string.

More seeds go to the front and back of the vertical pipes. Then you plant your seeds at just two-inch intervals. It’s true, just two inches .

You’ll end up with a 30 foot row equivalent in only ten feet of growing area. As your vines grow, soon enough there’ll be a solid wall of nutritious legumes. A wall o’beans!

Growing beans intensively in a cool climate

It’s easy to do this in ,say, the southern US where you have good light and growing days are extensive, bright and hot. Indeed, in tropical zones, climbing legumes can be productively planted a mere one inch from each other. So long as the beans get enough sun on their leaves, and lavish food and water, climbing legumes will do well even if packed together as tightly as radishes.

However, if you live in more temperate climes, space your plants a prudent distance of three inches apart and align the rows in a North/South direction so they have the most sunlight.

Amazingly, a trellis with three rows of beans very close together does very well even in a temperate zone given ample watering, say, from a leaky hose. The beans grow so close together that annual weeds are minimal.

Indeed, don’t bother weeding between the walls, except in the early days, because they mulch each other. Weeds don’t harm mature bean plants.

To have your plants suppress weeds is one of the best natural gardening ideas! It’s a key tenet of intensive gardening. But if you’re growing some rare variety be sure to build your trellises at least three foot apart. And dedicate each trellis to one variety.

Why? It’s enough distance so your climbing beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), the ‘common’ bean, will not easily cross-pollinate. So the seed at end of season will stay true to its variety.

Don’t grow more than one variety of runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus) in your garden, however, if you want to save the seed and preserve its integrity. Or if your neighbor is growing a separate strain. Runners need to be isolated by at least one mile.

Here’s a simple solution. Give your next door neighbor a few of your own rare runner bean seed. So it won’t matter if the plants cross-pollinate. Even better, if your crop fails you can then beg back some seed!

Organic gardening in hydroponics – Organic nutrients and growing mediums

The use of organic plant nutrients instead of the man-made chemicals in the hydroponic garden eases the work of a gardener. The matter is that the absence of synthetic chemicals eliminates the problem of ppm amount and pH balance of the water. If there is no need to calibrate nutrients, to check pH level of the water, and calculate fertilizer’s amount, a beginner of the hydroponic gardening will definitely make no mistakes, which means many problems may never occur.

A dual root growing system is made by special composition of the medium in the container: the upper part of the medium is soil or soil substitute, and organic nutrients can be supplied directly to this upper part; the lower half of the medium is some porous material, which retains water, but to which no nutrients are supplied. 

Creating an organic hydroponics system, a gardener may use a standard hydroponic grow container, though a coir fiber container will suit too. The preferred material to put at the bottom of the box is lava rock, which perfectly keeps water. Lava rock is then covered with a thin layer of loose rockwool or coir fiber to divide both medium layers and prevent them from mixing together. The upper half of the container should be filled with a mixture of 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 coarse grade horticulture perlite, and 1/3 large-sized horticulture vermiculite. Such arrangement ensures the upper capillary action of water and protects the bottom of the grow bed from the occasional mixing with any organic particles.

Using a standard plastic hydroponic grow container one should place a plastic screen lining inside the grow bed, fitting it well at the bottom and on the walls of the container up to their top, also with the aim to protect the water from the small particles in the medium mixture. It is also possible to use a hydroponic container with tiny holes.

One more good choice for the use of organic gardening methods in hydroponics system is coir fiber containers. The filling is the same as described above with the thin layer of loose or strand coir fiber between the two types of medium. 

Such box is then set in the grow bed. Note that the level of the pumped water should be a bit lower than the soil mixture. The secondary root system will be submerged into the water along with lava rock and promote the capillary water flow up into the soil. The lower half of the medium may be watered on a regular hydroponic basis, while the upper one can be moistened just once a day. 

This system allows a gardener to supply nutrients right to the upper part of the medium, where they are vitally important. At the same time, the whole medium structure will be perfectly moistened by the pumped water and the plants will also have constant supply of oxygen and CO2, drawn into their root systems. Finally, proper amount of CO2 will improve the absorption of nutrients by the upper parts of the roots.

Organic gardening in hydroponics – Ideal growing medium mixture for organic hydroponics gardening

Gardeners experience proves that the mixture of vermiculite, perlite, and organic potting soil (loose 100% organic soil mixture is also suitable) in equal proportions is the best for the successful organic hydroponics gardening. Such mixture offers the perfect upward capillary action of water and supply of CO2 and oxygen. Organic soil in the upper medium layer provokes microbial action.

Some growers practice mixing organic nutrients (e.g. worm castings) into the upper medium part. Others just distribute them on the surface of the grow medium and then spray them with water. Another way is to mix nutrients with half a cup of water and pour onto the top of the medium. Any of these methods ensure proper nutrients entrance into the soil mixture and good absorption by the plants primary roots.

The upper layer of the medium is also called “soil alternative”, as it is the place where the nutrients are supplied to. It is treated as a standard soil container. To improve the capillary action of the water delivered by the lava rock at the bottom, it is recommended to spray the soil alternative once or twice a day with water.

Creating your organic gardening using hydroponics system pay special attention to the level of the pumped water, this must not moisten the upper part of the medium. If this happens, the nutrients, delivered to this soil part of the growing medium, will be washed out into the water reservoir, becoming unavailable for the upper part of the plants root system.

The usual watering cycle takes about half an hour to make the whole upper part of the medium wet. If this time is not enough, you may set the timer to prolong the cycles. It is also possible to spray the upper half of the growing medium with water in addition to the regular pump-triggered watering. Remember that soil-based part should never be soaked in water – being moist is enough for growing organic plants.

Once you’ve gained some gardening knowledge it’s time to get your hands dirty.

Tomatoes and other vegetables are easy to grow if you start with good soil. Before you plant your garden, till the soil to about a depth of ten inches and dig in some well rotted compost or other organic material. Complete this step several weeks before you want to plant your tomatoes.

For a larger garden, you can rent a tiller, but for a small garden space you can use a gardening fork to dig in the compost.

When risk of frost has passed, drive a ¾ inch stake into your prepared garden bed. Dig a hole a little deeper and wider than the size of the tomato plant’s pot next to the stake, gently place the plant into the hole and firm it in. A trellis or tomato cage can also be used for support in lieu of a stake. These are readily available at nurseries and hardware stores. Use soft twine or tomato ties to tie the plant’s stem loosely to the stake or trellis. As the tomato plant grows, check the ties regularly and loosen them occasionally to prevent stem damage. The tomato seedlings should be planted 18 inches apart to allow the sun to reach the ripening fruit.

Feed Your Tomato Plants

Feed your tomato plants regularly using a potassium-based plant food or you can create your own organic fertilizer mix. Planting basil adjacent to your tomato plants will assist in keeping pests at bay.

Watering is as important as feeding. Water your tomatoes regularly with a hand-held hose. Direct the water at the base of the plant and avoid wetting the leaves which can lead to rot.

Never let your tomatoes dry out to the point that they wilt. Although you can usually save the wilted plant by watering it, the dry period will take its toll on the plant and affect the quality of the fruit. Extended dry spells may cause your tomatoes to crack.

Regularly nip out by hand any side shoots that develop between the leaf and the stem. This will help to channel the plant’s energy into its fruit.

When your tomatoes have ripened, pick them by bending back the fruit at the notch on the stem. Ripe tomatoes can be stored in the fridge for up to a week. Continue to water and feed the plant to help the remaining tomatoes to ripen and mature.
